Aaargh!!!!

Aargh!!!!!

What kind of ceremony? Reception? Bishop Frade surely realizes that the reception of a priest not laicized licenses that priest in the Episcopal Church. See this helpful guide to procedures in the Diocese of New York.

Is this a good idea? Yes, I know Archbishop Cranmer married while under a vow of celibacy.

Note: toni2701 points out that Fr. Cutie was received as a layman. Episcopal canon law apparently puts additional hurdles to the primitive church in this respect, though frankly the primitive church really never contemplated these kinds of transfers. See Article VIII of the Constitution and Canon III.10.3. But I find it interesting that the Diocese of New York does not mention reception until Step 22.

Here's another link to a fuller version of the story.

He was received into our church.

"On Thursday, Cutié and Canellis knelt in front of their new bishop and a handful of priests as Frade recited the traditional words to receive new members of the church.

''We recognize you as a member of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church;and we receive you into the fellowship of this communion. God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, bless, preserve and keep you. Amen,'' Frade said."

Yes, I know Archbishop Cranmer married while under a vow of celibacy.Note a crucial difference--"Cranmer married...". I very much doubt he was having a sexual affair with Osiander's niece before he married her.

Honestly, though, by laws of Church and land, I'm no better than Fr. Cutié, so while I see the point of order, I also know something of social realities (like those of the Roman Church) that are mendacious.

I think it's the speed of this that bothers me the most. It certainly bothers the Roman Catholics:

"At a news conference a few hours later, Archdiocese of Miami officials expressed disappointment in Cutié and had strong words for the Episcopal Church, especially Bishop Frade.

''This truly is a serious setback for ecumenical relations and cooperation between us,'' Archbishop John C. Favalora said.

Favalora said he had not communicated with Frade about the transition and had not spoken with Cutié since May 5, adding that Cutié never told the archbishop he desired marriage"
